This discipline, well known in italian as "Cacciafotosub", is consisting to   capture, with the camera optic, the largest number of fishes species. It is  possibile to accomplish such captures, following two different ways: by apnea and  by scuba, from who we can distinguish two categories: "Sport" (by apnea only) and   "Scuba" (by aqualung only). Psychophysics training and specific aquaintance of the   marine species populating the Mediterranean sea, are requested. That's keeping such   activity even more interesting, just because's pushing us to encrease our knowledge of this still partially discovered world. Rules are simples! To present the Jury, pictures with the following features: absence of technical errors (correct   exposure and focus); clearly distinguishable specie; minimum size for the subject not lesser than 1/3 of the longer side of the frame. Additionally, it is not allowed to display more than one image, showing the same specie. There are samples belonging to the same specie that, sometimes, it seems to appear like being part of different species ( what happens, for instance, in sexual dimorphism), as showed in the pictures below:

This "labride" shows, while growing, some                           Another frame, showing the same subject

substantial variation of the colors body. Picture                            from the left, in a male nuptial color.

shows the red variant of the "Symphodus ocellatus".

This picture shows a commonly named "Donzella"    This image shows a male "Coris Juli" with its

(Coris Juli). Such specie's showing a Particular           colors at the maximum radiance. It could to

feature, shared with other species too: the ability             appear, to a non-used eye, as if the two

to  change sex in case of death of the dominant         samples here showed, aren't from the same

male! Will be the biggest sized female to slowly           specie. Well, it isn't this way! We are still

become a male one. The picture above shows                              observing a "Coris Juli"!

the transition color body of a "Coris Juli" female,

                                  passing to the male status.

Safari fotosub has passed through a transition period, due to the change of the light exposed support of the SLR camera. Film support has been replaced from digital sensor, in modern DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) and in digital compact cameras (With not interchangeable optic). If on one hand the digital advent brought us to noticeable advantages (see the possibility to observe pictures in real time), on the other hand it forced many to set aside analogic equipment, built with several years of sacrifice! Obviously, problems like that shortly above described, could never stop someone who lives for such a passion and it's just because of this that many people continues subscribing to courses for such a discipline, even using normal compact digital cameras and succeed to obtain good results. My agonistic career had quit some year ago, but i've never abandoned of the amazing world of the competition, infact i've become a federal "FIPSAS" judge.
